Fields

Every weekend seven out of 18 football fields host more than 100 youth. Most of them are murram fields situated in the informal settlements surrounding Kisumu city. KYFA has identified 5 crucial fields that will be upgraded in 2007 and 2008.

The goal of the project is to strengthen an enabling football environment for the vulnerable and disadvantaged youth living in the densely populated shanty areas of Kisumu. There are few good football pitches. Most of KYFA competition matches are being played on muram grounds, with high risk of injuries. By rehabilitating the dilapidated existing football fields, foremost the accessibility and safety of football for children and youth would improve. KYFA believes that a good football pitch will encourage more youth to play football. It will also be key for the further development of their football skills, hence the improvement of the level of the game in Kisumu.

In collaboration with the Kisumu authorities and the local communities KYFA strives to facilitate the renovation of about five football fields within the next two years. This will mean a complete overhaul of the existing grounds, including replanting grass, rebuilding the goals and appropriate fencing amongst others. The authorities will guarantee the availability of the field. So far five fields have been identified spread out over the various estates in the shanty areas of Kisumu. The local communities including the KYFA participating football teams from the respective areas are mobilized and engaged in maintaining the field. The whole process is being monitored and facilitated by KYFA.
